Pereira defended the UFC middleweight title against Adesanya, the former champion. UFC 287 takes place at the Miami-Dade Arena in Florida.

A reigning kickboxing champion, Pereira turned professional in 2015. After losing his first fight, he has won seven in a row and is 4-0 in UFC play. At UFC 281 in New York, Pereira defeated Adesanya for the UFC middleweight title via TKO.

Adesanya made his professional debut in 2012 and joined the UFC in 2018. In 2019, he defeated Kelvin Gastelum for the UFC interim middleweight title and Robert Whittaker for the championship a few months later. “The Last Stylebender” defended the belt five times before losing to Pereira.

The loss ended a 23-fight win streak in the division. Pereira became the second-least experienced UFC champion since Brock Lesnar.

In 2016, Adesanya and Pereira fought at GLORY of Heroes 1 in China. Adesanya overpowered his opponent, but Pereira landed combinations and strikes that did the damage. Depending on how you look at it, while Pereira slowed down late, Adesanya couldn’t take advantage. Pereira would eventually secure the win via unanimous decision.

 

Pereira then faced Adesanya at GLORY of Heroes 7 in 2017. In Pereira’s hometown of Brazil, Adesanya was the aggressor who opened things up. He had Pereira on the ropes in the second round, however, in the third round Pereira landed a devastating blow to the chin that dropped Adesanya.

In their third fight, at UFC 281, Adesanya landed 86 of 209 significant strikes and over six minutes of control. Perera landed 91 of 140 jabs, but it wasn’t until the fifth round that he landed brutal jabs that forced Adesanya to the cage. Unguarded shots were held up and the referee had seen enough. Pereira took gold and a 3-0 lead over his opponent.
