Anthony Joshua vs. Jermaine Franklin Boxing Dates, Start Times, Schedule, Price & Ticket 2023
A former two-time heavyweight king, Anthony Joshua is on the outside for the first time in his career. Under a new coach, but on the familiar grounds of London’s O2 Arena, AJ will take on American challenger Jermaine Franklin on April 1st. The 12-round fight, plus undercard action, will be broadcast exclusively by DAZN.
An Olympic gold medalist in 2012, Joshua defeated Charles Martin for the IBF heavyweight title in 2016. It was his first taste of gold at the World Championships, but not his last. He defeated Wladimir Klitschko for the vacant WBA belt and Joseph Parker for the WBO title.

However, since 2019, Joshua has gone 2-3 in his last five fights. He lost the belt to Andy Ruiz Jr. before defeating an inspired Ruiz that year. After defeating Kubrat Pulev, Joshua lost his title again, this time to former undisputed lightweight champion Oleksandr Usyk. In the August rematch, Joshua lost again and fought back by throwing the belt to the canvas and rampaging.
The coach has changed after the loss of Joshua Ruiz. He will now be working with acclaimed trainer Derrick James and plans to “go back to basics” for this fight.
“I think Jermaine Franklin should be taken more seriously than Osik. I know better now,” Joshua told DAZN. “The way I trained, it wasn’t enough. I have to put more pressure on myself. As long as I am fighting, I will have personal expectations to improve.”

Franklin turned pro in 2015. His biggest fight until recently was a unanimous decision win over Rydell Booker in 2019. In November, Franklin lost to former world title contender Dillian Whyte in a controversial majority decision. Though disappointed, Tim Franklin knew his level of performance would attract bigger fights.
“I know Dillian Whyte has a lot more potential than Jermaine in the fight,” promoter of Slita’s promotion, Dimitri Slita, told the Sporting News. “When he got into the fight, he wasn’t that active, and it was a fight on relatively short notice. He got into training camp and did what he could, and it was a great performance. Jermaine fought in November. strong and back in the gym. I think the fight, even in defeat, has given him some confidence. Jermaine is really not threatened by anyone.
“We don’t know what Joshua has left. I think Jermaine has athleticism, speed and a great chin. He has all the tools to signal a turnaround.”
Anthony Joshua returns on Saturday night.
The next stage of Anthony Joshua’s career begins on Saturday night when he takes on America’s Jermaine Franklin.
After two back-to-back losses to unified world heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk, Joshua is now in need of an urgent rebuild and a statement performance against Franklin would be the perfect start.
If Joshua can make easy work of the 29-year-old, then he will re-assert himself into the world title picture and prove that he is still a force to be reckoned with in the heavyweight division.
