Donaire (42-6, 28 KO) entered the tournament thinking that many were far beyond his prime and lost to Jesse Magdaleno and Carl Frampton in two of the last three. Donaire won his first two fights in the WBSS tournament but did not make it to the final as Inoue calmed down many concerns about the current form. In the first round, Burnett defeated Ryan Burnett after suffering a back injury in just four rounds of the fight, and the semi-final match was against Zolani Tete’s successor, Stephen Young.

But given a shot at Inoue, one of the best fighters in the world, Donaire still has a lot of skills to see him win 30 consecutive battles from 2001 to 2012. He showed that he has won world titles in flyweight, super bantamweight, bantamweight, and super bantamweight. In his 35th professional battle, Donaire also added a featherweight world title to his already impressive collection.

“Nonito is more special than anyone else in ranking him in the fighters I’ve faced before,” Inoue said in an interview with Boxing Scene. “I still have a lot of things I want to do in my career and I see this fight as a checkpoint like any other fight.

“It’s very impressive to beat Uvali and Gavaro, who are neither easy opponents, in four rounds. I can imagine Donaire doing a lot of hard work at the gym.”

Donaire was out of the ring in 2021 until he knocked out Nordine Oubaali in the fourth round to win the WBC title and then held the belt in the fourth round of knockout. This time it surpassed Raymart Bavaro.

Inoue’s nickname “The Monster” is appropriate given his overwhelming power to defeat all but three career opponents. Inoue won world titles in junior flyweight, junior bantamweight, and bantamweight before becoming one of the Pounds for Pound elite sports.
